Despite being available for years in the UK, Ceratostigma are still not widely grown. Those lucky enough to have them however recognise them to be among the most interesting and colourful plants of the autumn. Technically a subshrub Ceratostigma plumbaginoides form reasonably woody stems, though these tend to die back each winter returning in late spring with foliage before doing its thing in late summer in autumn.

The firey autumnal foliage colours and vibrant blue flowers these compact, little plants make them a valuable addition to any garden provided that they have reasonable drainage and enough sun and warmth to let them shine!

Parhaps hardier than one would expect from a plant with such unusual colour, Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, like its cousin C. willmotianum are hardy in all but the coldest/wettest Winters. With sensible placement in a garden, these wonderful plants will give flower and progressively improving leaf colour between late July and the first strong frosts. At this point, C. plumbaginoides will die back completely to ground level, returning in late Spring with frsh green, slightly purple mottled leaves.
