A-Z of Plants
Weigela is an old fashioned beauty which flowers through spring and summer. It is a tough and hardy shrub with plenty of attractive features. Weigelas originate from woodland areas or Eastern Asia and are admired for their delicate blooms.
There are many varieties of Weigela which range in colour from soft pink, purple, red, white and cream. The foliage of Weigelas is varied across the varieties, some with golden leaves, some dark purple and some which are variegated. Weigelas are often used as a dense-leafy backdrop for the back of flower borders and will reach an average height of around 2 metres.
Weigela are best when planted in a sunny spot or partial shade and thrive in moist but well drained soil.
Weigela ‘All Summer Red’ is an outstanding variety which produces funnel-shaped red flowers and bright green foliage. The flowers last from spring, throughout summer and well into autumn and look great beds, borders and containers.
Another wonderful variety is Weigela florida 'Wine and Roses'. This dark leaved variety has glossy wine-purple foliage which deepens and intensifies in autumn. Masses of deep pink trumpet shaped flowers are borne in spring which are adored by bees and butterflies.
