Description

Growth: 3m High x 6m Spread

Tree like fern, evergreen in mild climates. An erect rhizone covered with a mass of roots forms a trunk bearing 2 or 3 pinnate pale green fronds that darken with age.

Trunk takes 10 years to grow 30cm - Plant in a sheltered area out of the wind. Ferns need a reasonable level of humidity and ideally some shade. In these conditions they will remain evergreen.

Try to aviod planting in full hot sun unless regularly irrigated/misted. Water or mist the plant daily in summer. Water overhead and down the crown or saturate the trunk. Never allow to dry out.

Winter Protection Tie up the fronds and wrap fleece or any protective cover around the crown and trunk. A handful of straw down the crown also protects the head. In the wild fallen fronds and leaves collect here and provide protection.

In the wild they grow in conditions where the winter temperature can reach -10C.
