Description

Singularly, one of the most under-rated shrubs available to UK gardeners. A true gem, with a long flowering season and a great deal of interest to offer. Perhaps less popular than it should be as it tends to look unbalanced in a pot, once in the ground, it is quick to settle and get growing. To achieve the best possible plant, position it in a warm, sheltered spot away from the wind. Too much sun can make the leaves bleach, though it will grow quite happily in most lights. Flowering is best in a reasonably sunny, sheltered spot, in any reasonable, free draining soil.

When happy, it will flower from late spring through to the first frosts and has the great quality of hanging on the the pink calyxes (base of the flower) after the flower has fallen off. This gives an extra dimension of interest making that plant appear to be in flower all the time.

In time its arching habit can lead to it forming a handsome fountain shape.

Semi-evergreen, dark, glossy foliage. Expect it to lose between 25 and 50% of its leaves most winters.

Growth: 1.5m high x 1.8m wide.
