Focus on Phormium

Phormium - A genus of two species, one endemic in New Zealand, the other shared with Norfolk Island plus hybrids that have arisen in cultivation. Large perennials with long leathery sword like leaves arranged in fans arising directly from fleshy, rhizomatous roots. Named from the Greek phormion, a mat, or basket referring to strong fibres produced by the leaves, which were used for basket making.

Highly valued in landscaping, this plant gives unique character. They grow in any reasonable soil and are good plants for planting near the sea and industrial areas. Phormium's are hardy in all but the coldest of areas.
