Colour in the garden is perhaps one of the hardest and most controversial aspects of garden design, essentially because it’s so subjective.



Colour dictates both mood and style within a border. Cooling blues and whites create depth while hot reds and oranges make a border literally jump out at you.

A contrasting colours scheme is perhaps the most user friendly method of choosing a design. Simply choose two colours from opposite sides of the rainbow and use them both in the same border. An example would be yellow and blue, the classic combinations of blue Agapanthus and yellow kniphofias is well known.

Harmonising colour is another traditional method; selecting plants in different shades of the same colour can create a truly beautiful garden. A border comprising of lilacs, purples, blues and whites is really something to behold.

Monochromatic designs appeal to the more colour sensitive people amongst us. The most notable version of this idea being the purest of white gardens. Subtle, stylish and soothing in the extreme.

Classic combinations will always last the test of time. A traditional cottage garden would not be the same without its fair share of pastel colours and soft flowing flowers. Likewise a prairie border would not be the same without its rusty reds, burnt sienna’s, brilliant oranges and rich golden yellows.

What about a tropical border with luscious green foliage and moody flowers in darkest burgundy highlighted with splashes of purple and orange ( very Christopher Lloyd ).
