Hedges and Shelterbelts

View our Online Bare Root Hedging Catalogue

Hedging and Shelter belts are a vital part of creating natural boundaries and divisions within a planting scheme. They protect the main planting areas from ravages of wind, frost and other weather extremes.

A small micro climate is often created within these boundaries to accommodate more exotic planting that wouldn`t otherwise survive. They also offer the added bonus of providing natural habitats for wildlife and birds. Choosing the right hedging can also provide a substantial burglar proof barrier over time, an increasingly important point.

Cultivation

Many hedging plants are versatile and will grow in most soils and situations. However, some varieties are more suited to certain soil types, so choosing the right plants is essential.

For a formal hedge, prune regularly to promote bushy growth. Natural hedges can be left to grow and form an informal boundary. When pruning don`t forget to take into account any wildlife present, particularly in the spring.

Bare root hedging are field grown plants that are dug after leaf fall in the autumn. The soil is removed from around the tree roots, and they are then put in an `environment bag`

This special heavyweight plastic bag keeps frost off the delicate roots. The white outside of the bag reflects any heat from the sun, and the black inside keeps the roots dark and moist. Ideally trees should not stay in a bag for long, but kept in cool conditions out of direct sunlight.

The most common way of planting a hedge is in a double row with 5 plants per metre.

Root Dips

All bare root hedging will be dipped with Rootgrow professional - Mycorrhizal fungi and Hydro Gel prior to dispatch.

The Hydro Gel will keep the roots hydrated in transit, whilst the Mycorrhizal will colonise the plant roots to aid establishment and improve overall plant health.
